City of Protest – Podcast with Antony Dapiran

Our focus is Hong Kong and our podcast features Antony Dapiran, author of City of Protest: A Recent History of Dissent in Hong Kong.

“Hong Kong is a city with a long history of civil disobedience.”

So begins the book blurb on Amazon.com for a now-sold-out book published in July 2017. It was a timeless observation on the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong’s Handover. It is a timely observation today with most in Hong Kong wondering what’s next.

“We are on the cusp of what could be a general breakdown of law and order. It hasn’t gotten there yet, but the government hasn’t done anything to stop it,” said Antony Dapiran in The New York Times on 5 August 2019,

“City of Protest is a compelling look at the often-fraught relationship between politics and belonging, and a city’s struggle to assert itself.”

Listen to Antony as we discuss the changes and challenges facing Hong Kong today. You can follow him on Twitter @AntD.

Pre-Briefing Book: The Future of Work

Warp speed developments in technology – automation, artificial intelligence and the arrival of the sharing economy – are transforming how we work. Beyond technology, traditional working patterns are also being disrupted.

World Economic Forum

The future of work is one of the hottest management topics of the day. This complex subject is broken into three main categories, according to a podcast from McKinsey: automation, changing models (think gig), and income stagnation/equality.

What will jobs alongside machines look like? What do we need to do – as organisations and as individuals – to prepare for these wide-ranging scenarios. How do you get ready?

Change is a constant, so flexibility and creativity are of paramount importance. Be prepared for the future of work.

We’re honoured to have three top-notch professionals to dive in and pull apart our topic:

Our event is moderated by member David Ketchum, CEO, Current Asia and hosted by Santo Rizzuto, Director, Asia Insight Circle.

Apologies from Walter Jennings as he is travelling from Madrid after speaking at #DES19 (Digital Enterprise Show).

Gordon Orr, ex-McKinsey APAC Chief – “Getting on Boards”

Gordon Orr, the former Asia chairman at global management consulting firm McKinsey & Company, today addressed “Getting on Boards.” He shared his insights into the Board selection process, expected obligations, and how to position yourself for consideration.

On LinkedIn Gordon Orr has 1.5 million followers. You’ll want to subscribe.

Gordon serves as a non-executive director at Hong Kong-listed conglomerate Swire Pacific. He also serves on the board of Lenovo, the US-Chinese technology company.

“The board of directors‘ key purpose is to ensure the company’s prosperity by collectively directing the company’s affairs, whilst meeting the appropriate interests of its shareholders and stakeholders,” according to Brefi, a UK-based organisation that assists companies with the optimisation of their boards.

At our March meeting of Asia Insight Circle, we learned how Boards manage the selection process and what you can do to position yourself for consideration.

An “After Breakfast @ Asia Insight Circle” podcast will be published the week of 1 April (not kidding).

Hong Kong FinTech Week with Musheer Ahmed

On the eve of Hong Kong FinTech Week, Musheer Ahmed provided members of Asia Insight Circle a preview of the world’s first cross-border financial technology conference taking place in Hong Kong, Asia’s financial capital, and in Shenzhen, China’s Silicon Valley. Some 8,000+ attendees from over 50 countries will meet to preview, share, and discuss technology trends impacting the financial services sector.

Mr Musheer is General Manager of The FinTech Association of Hong Kong (FTAHK) – an independent, not-for-profit, membership based association representing Hong Kong’s local and global FinTech community.

Deloitte has ranked Hong Kong fifth in the world among fintech centres, behind London, Singapore, New York and Silicon Valley, but the city’s impressive business culture, high-tech infrastructure, government support and funding, along with a world-class talent pool, are proving attractive to fintechs. FinTech Week features over 200 of the world’s top FinTech founders, investors, regulators, and academics, who are shaping the future of financial services by driving a technological revolution in the industry across Asia and globally.

Among the keynote speakers is Oleg Tinkov, founder of the Tinkoff Bank – the world’s largest fully online bank, and today one of the most profitable banks in the world. Tinkoff Bank received ‘Bank of the Year’ status from Financial Times Banker Magazine in 2017.

Even those not in financial services benefit from understanding the business shifts underway, said Musheer. He discussed at length the creation of ecosystems bringing together financial services with other industries, whether healthcare of supply chain.

“The emergence of ecosystems marks a shift in the landscape as unexpected alliances are forged, sector boundaries blur, and long-standing strengths count for less. It also marks a shift in how business leaders manage relationships within an ecosystem.” (Source: “Winning in Digital Ecosystems” by McKinsey)
